Politics and public service are in Laura Ross’
DNA. So when she was tapped by Hillary Clinton’s
State Department to follow in the footsteps of Eleanor
Roosevelt, Coretta Scott King and Paul Newman,
amongst others, and serve as a public delegate to the
U.N., she was honored and thrilled to accept. For
three months, she lobbied ambassadors from every
country in the world, trying to win them over to the
wisdom of U.S. policy—from freedom of speech
to security for Israel. She also addressed the
General Assembly on several topics ranging from
international drug trafficking to blood diamonds. She
recently sat down with her friend, Fleur Harlan,
a retired investment banker and the former wife of
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to whom
she was married when he served as Israel’s ambassador
to the U.N. Ross and Harlan discussed the value of
the U.N., lunching with foreign dignitaries and what
it’s like to stand at the podium where so many world
leaders have stood.
