Britain’s recent polls suggest that the country is ready for its first conservative government since Tory Margaret Thatcher’s successor John Major was
defeated in 1997. The Conservative Party, now the “shadow” government—led
by David Cameron, 42, and “shadow” Chancellor [opposition treasury secretary]
38-year-old George Osborne—has put a new face on what had become a staid
and out-of-touch party. Author Frances Osborne, wife of George, comes
from a long line of prominent politicians, as well as a sprinkling of rather
glamorous, yet scandalous, family members. In her latest book, The Bolter,
Frances chronicles the intimate details of the salacious life of her great
grandmother, Lady Idina Sackville, who was portrayed in the movie
White Mischief starring Greta Scacchi. Vanity Fair’s Vicky Ward sits down
with her longtime friend, Frances, for a chat.
