AVENUE: How did you get into the family business?
SD: I was 19 when I started and I was so curious about this job that took
so much of my parents’ time. I thought, there must be something fascinating about it. I found that the passion and the joy of this job are
contagious. Then the same thing happened to my two brothers!
Sometimes passion can be inherited. So it’s me, my brothers and my
mother. Unfortunately, my father passed away 13 years ago. But I
would never marry someone that does the same job as me because
it would be a little too much! And my son is too young—he’s five, a little boy—he will do whatever he wants.
AVENUE: What is Damiani’s creative process?
SD: The collections are created following our DNA. Everything should
be three-dimensional because you see jewelry from different points
of view. It’s a sculpture. You should feel comfortable when you wear
it because it’s part of a life, of a person. We always like to refresh our
collections because we want them to remain very fashionable. And
then every year we have one new collection, and for that we always
refer to the trend of the moment. We choose the trends that will be
long wave because a person should be very happy with it for at least
10 years. So, in a way, we have to take the essence of a moment
and turn it into something that can stay.
AVENUE: What aspect of your work do you enjoy most?
SD: I always enjoy working with famous photographers. If they are
famous, there is always a reason! But really, whatever keeps me
learning. I don’t think anybody in the creative field could do their job
if they weren’t curious; everything starts from there. So whenever there
is a new project and there is something very challenging, I am
happy. Every year, the collection is challenging because you have to
do something new while working with all these barriers.
AVENUE: What are you most proud of in your personal life? Your
career?
SD: Personally, my son. Life is simply a miracle. Every time I listen to
him talking and I see his development, I am amazed. In the job, our
company holds the worldwide record in winning 18 Diamonds
International Awards. The contest is judged only by the piece; our
company is not identified so there’s no bias towards a more prominent brand. Winning based solely on design and craftsmanship
makes you really proud. ;
